Custom Duty on Mobile Phones?

The News carried out a story that a proposal will be presented for the upcoming budget to impose Rs. 1000 as custom duty on import of a mobile handset. Geo News later said that the imposition is likely to come into effect from 11th June 2008.
A direct implication of this will be a price hike (another one) in the mobile phone market. I don’t understand the point of this custom duty. I really hope that the financial brains re-think over this. Even the cheaper mobile sets will see a rise in price.
