Indeed, only the present president can be impeached. The charges of previous tenure do not apply, arguably, and that's one reason if this thing goes to impeachment then it will be a long legal battle. Since no president has been impeached before, many issues will need clarification. And that's where SC comes in.

Moreover, the acts of 12 October and 3 November were taken by COAS and not the president. Therefore, president cannot be impeached on these two acts as the president did not do them (as per my common sense). The right place to put to justice the perpetrator of 12 Oct and 3 November is the SC where the former COAS (not the present president) would be tried. One more thing, i was reading somewhere that the present assembly cannot impeach the president for something he did in the tenure of previous assembly.

Interesting to note your comment, as it shows some neutrality. Impeachment process merely overshadows the fight for restoration of Chief Justice/judiciary. Yet another drama staged to serve some other purpose.

I agree. It's not clear what the President of Pakistan can be impeached for. Anyway I thought that the Pakistani government (PPP and PML-N) wanted to restore the former Chief Justice. Impeaching the President is not going to achieve that. In fact impeaching Musharraf will not achieve anything. The status quo will remain. The only thing that will change is that there will be another president. What a waste of time and money!

Reading Pakistani newspapers I can see that they all want the President to leave before the impeachment process for "the sake of democracy". However I thought the whole point of democracy is to all the constitution and parlimentary system to prevail. So in fact it is better for Pakistani democracy to allow the impeachment process to follow its natural course.

Musharraf will already know all this. He's smart enough to get out of this one. But anything is possible in Pakistan. So be ready for another drama.
