Mustafa Kamal #2? Karachi #57

It was well publicized that Mustafa Kamal has been ranked as the 2nd best mayor in the world. The news made the frontpage in almost every paper. This came as no surprise for the residents of Karachi who have actually witnessed the change. But there are people who’re just unable to digest this news.

A well respected Jamaat-e-Islami member said yesterday that this is a propaganda by MQM!! He added that Mustafa Kamal is actually ranked as #57. I checked on the Foreign Policy website and the link is:

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=4509&page=3

It says clearly who the top three mayors (edit: no rankings!) are. The numbers in the brackets are the ranking of the city.

Similarly, PTI (yeah, it stands for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) boasts on its website that this ranking is false and they called FP magazine to confirm that! Members of PTI (I hardly know of anyone other than Imran Khan) have a forum where they say that Mustafa Kamal is best “when it comes to build collapsable flyovers.” Now, collapsable flyovers is a fantastic idea though, but the author is referring to the Shershah flyover that collapsed. It must be noted that Shershah flyover wasn’t a project of CDGK and Mustafa Kamal had no involvement in it. It was a project of NHA (National Highway Authority), which is a federal organization.

To hell with PTI, congratulations to Mustafa Kamal (edit) for being mentioned.

F**k these bastards man, we know how hard that guy has worked, MQM or no MQM.

Imran Khan is the guy who tried to exploit Altaf Husain’s divorce for his political desires, what else can you expect from him and his party?

No denying the fact that MK has done a lot for Karachi and in my personal opinion better than the previous mayor of JI. However, that should not overwhelm us to the point that we fail to see things for what they are.

The website you linked to says “three of the world’s top mayors”. And that still is an honor in its own right. But I am sure if you pause to think for a moment, you would realize that there is a world of difference between that and saying “world’s top three mayors”.

The fuming of PTI and JI guys is silly for sure but that doesn’t give weight to MQM’s interpretation that MK has been ranked the second best mayor.

@Brickwall: Thanks for the link, it surely helps in clarification. The point is, therefore, that MK is not “ranked” but his work has been accredited and recognized in the standing of some other heavyweights.

However, I fail to understand what exactly you mean by saying “fail to see things for what they are.” If at all there are any ulterior motives, I’ll surely not give a damn because I see progress. Isn’t that better than just words, or even nothing?

All I wanted to observe was the fact that you failed to notice something which was very obvious to me in the link to FP in your post. Which is that MK was only highlighted and never ranked.

However, please note that it wasn’t a negative pointer at the objectivity of your thoughts. I can imagine being a human that there can be innocent reasons behind that too.

Dude, he is NOT the #2 mayor in the world. According to FP, he is among the “mayors of the moment”, which is good n all but I don’t get why everyone is so hyped about the fact that he’s the second best in the world. He’s doing good work, isn’t that enough?

Let me clarify, at the time of writing this post all the tv channels were reporting that he’s #2, that would have been great. But as ‘Brickwall’ pointed out there’s no such ranking. But even then, being mentioned is a recognition of his work. My point was against his opponents, JI and PTI, who are busy trying to defame him.

@Raza: He’s the best thing that has ever happened to Karachi!

true…we have never had anyone better than him, so far atleast. i know that he’s making good money, but atleast he’s working!
